Detroit’s Bats Explode for Six Homeruns in KC

Kauffman Stadium just wasn’t big enough for Victor Martinez and the Tigers on Thursday night. In their 10-4 win over the Royals, Detroit connected on a total of six homeruns.

V-Mart lead the way, clubbing three solo shots in five at-bats. The offensive outburst is just the latest in a resurgent season for the veteran slugger. Following his disastrous 2016, it seemed the now-37-year-old may have nothing left in the tank. After this recent outing, he now owns an impressive .338/.387/.945 line over 243 PA, good for a 152 wRC+ (11th highest in baseball).

Miguel Cabrera, Nick Castellanos, and James McCann each chipped in one homerun a piece. Cabrera’s, a 2-run go-ahead blast to the opposite field, snapped his two week long homerless drought (dating back to May 31st). Justin Verlander picked up the win.

The news wasn’t all good for Detroit, though. Star outfielder J.D. Martinez fractured his elbow after colliding with the outfield wall in the second inning. The 28-year-old is expected to avoid surgery but will miss 4-6 weeks.

Scott Ferris is a diehard Braves fan trying to smile through the pain this season. He lives in Philadelphia and once followed Mike Piazza around a Whole Foods. You can find his writing here on MLB.Vote, where he promises to say at least one good thing about the Mets.
